Common causes
Triggers can be a clogged particulate filter, a sticking EGR valve, faulty sensors, boost pressure problems or fuel supply issues. The stored fault codes shows which one applies.
What you should do now
Stop in a safe place. Sometimes limp mode disappears after switching the engine off and on, but that does not fix the cause. Avoid driving under heavy load and have the car checked.
