If a diesel suddenly feels weak or jerks, the cause is often in the exhaust or intake side. Here are the common causes and what you can do.
Common causes are a clogged particulate filter, a sooted or sticking EGR valve, faulty sensors, a dirty mass air flow (MAF) sensor, or problems with fuel or the turbocharger. Which one applies can only be said for sure after reading the stored fault codes and inspecting the car.
Check whether a warning light is on, whether the tank is nearly empty and whether the air filter looks very dirty. With a loaded particulate filter, a longer drive at steady speed sometimes helps the regeneration finish.
If the car goes into limp mode, a red warning light comes on or heavy smoke leaves the exhaust, stop and call a workshop. Driving on can cause further damage.
