What risks exist
A heavily loaded filter raises the exhaust back pressure. This can burden the engine and the turbocharger. If the soot burns off uncontrolled, the ceramic substrate can be damaged, and then cleaning no longer helps.
When you should act
If the light comes on repeatedly, power drops or the car goes into limp mode, have the filter checked. The earlier, the better the chance that the original filter can be cleaned.
