The light reports that the control unit has stored a fault. Here is how urgent it is and what you can do.
Check engine light is on
Yellow, red or flashing
If it is yellow, have the car checked soon. If it flashes or a red warning light is on, stop and do not drive on, as further damage is possible.
What you can do yourself
Check that the fuel cap is closed properly, whether the car runs normally and whether other lights are on. Clearing the message without checking the cause usually does not solve the problem.
